This product is a high-power UV-C LED with a peak wavelength of 280 nm and a radiant power of 28 mW at the specified drive current.

The germicidal effect of UV-C radiation is well documented: photons in the 250–280 nm range are absorbed by the DNA and RNA of micro-organisms and form dimers that prevent replication, which inactivates bacteria, moulds and viruses. The decisive design parameter is the dose, that is the irradiance on the target surface multiplied by the exposure time, so the radiant power, the beam angle and the working distance all have to be considered together when sizing an application.

This version is supplied ready-mounted on a 10 x 10 mm metal-core board. That solves the two hardest problems of working with deep-UV packages: the LED is already soldered with the correct profile, and the metal core conducts the heat away from the die. Reflow-soldering a UV package by hand is difficult and easily damages it, so the pre-mounted version is usually the faster and safer route into a prototype.

Two properties distinguish UV LEDs from white LEDs in the design work. Their radiant output is specified in milliwatts rather than lumens, because the human eye is not the measuring instrument here. And they are considerably more sensitive to junction temperature, with both the output and the lifetime falling noticeably as the LED heats up, so a generously dimensioned heat sink is not optional.

About NKFG

NKFG Co., Ltd. is a Taiwanese deep-ultraviolet specialist founded in 2018 as a joint venture between Formosa Petrochemical and the Japanese engineering group Nikkiso, and it produces its own deep-UV chips as well as finished UVC-LED packages and disinfection modules. A supplier that makes its own chips can specify radiant power and degradation behaviour from measurement rather than from a distributor's data sheet, which is what lets you design an irradiation system with a defined service interval instead of guessing at one.
